When I Discovered Nebelungs

It was one year ago, Christmas 2004, that I received a deck of playing cards from my sister-in-law. The deck came in a cute green oval container with rubber cat ears, eyes and tail. As much as I enjoyed the unique card case, I enjoyed the cards even more! Each card contained a wonderful portrait of a cat breed. Several cards contained cat breeds I had never heard of!

nebelung card And you can guess that I saw one that looked exactly like Nona! I was floored! Just look for yourself--the card is darn near a portrait of Nona! I knew my Nona was special but I had no idea she was a pure breed.

Nona looked just like a Nebelung breed. I had never heard of that breed. But of course I was curious. I got online and searched for information about Nebelungs. I was floored again--Nebelung traits matched my Nona!

I took it upon myself to contact Cora Cobb and after sharing several photos and emailing back and forth, Cora said that it appeared to be that I had myself a Nebelung from an early line of Nebelung. (Earlier lines of Nebelungs commonly had eyes that were more green-yellow in color rather than the newer green-green color.)
So, now you know how I discovered that I had a Nebelung. One day, I'll share with you how Nona came to live at our house.

Happy New Year!

Nerissa

  1. I adopted a Nebelung from my sister's friend Nancy whose husband was allergic. Her name was Baby, though my family renamed her Duforth. Nancy did not know Baby's breed, and even the veterinarian called her a British Longhair. After Duforth died in 2004, I missed her so much I ended up doing image searches of cats, and finally identified her as a Nebelung. She was the perfect cat, placid and pretty, with a lovely heartshaped nose. Even before I knew her breed I knew she was special.

  2. We also have a Nebelung! His name is Shadow, I adopted him when he was 3 months old in 2002 in Sacramento, CA.
One night my husband and I got curious and started to research the heritage of our cat...we were convinced he was rare/special. He fits every description to a "t" it is amazing. Looking at all the photos were like looking at pictures that I have taken of him. He is like a precious gift and a lovable little one at that. He is also a mute which I wonder if it could be a characteristic of the breed.
I just thought that I would share my exciting discovery with you...we have lots of pics of course if you are interested. Thanks :)

  5. Hello - I am new to this blog. many of you have shared similar experiences to mine. I adopted a cute little gray long hair from our shelter - he had a Russian Blue looking mom - but she had yellow eyes. One sister was also gray long hair, one sib was short haired dark gray and two sibs were white with some black. It was when I had Galveston for a about a month that I started to notice he was special. His legs were too long for him and his collar did not need to be loosened much from when he was much smaller. Then I noticed the shorter fur on his shoulders, fromt legs and lower hind legs. The long - way too long for his size - plume tail is amazing.

Someone saw a photo of him and wanted to let me know she had a Nebelung once. I had no clue what she was talking about - then I surfed the web and the kittens his age where his twins.

I am sure he has some Nebelung genetics from somewhere - maybe the old breed of Nebelung like Cora Cobb's kittens. His eyes are still a yellow color at age 5 months - but is some lights, they have a green tint. Does anyone else know of anyone who just had a Nebelung "pop up" from strays like this. Very interesting to me. He is a sweetie - that is for sure. Will try to take a video and post it soon. Cathy

  8. Smoki and the Bandit6/9/10, 4:31 PM

I met our nebelung,Smoki, named by our son, around January this year one early evening on the front porch. It seemed very tame,(sex unknown)for a stray it was odd and I knew it was different. Didn't know what kind of cat it was but we feed and attract a variaty of neiborhood strays. Most times they see me and stop in there tracks and are very causious or run. With Smoki he came right up to me when I called kitty, kitty, kitty. He was real thin and looked haggard, so I called the wife to bring food and water. He readily ate. Smoki kept apearing the next following days and I decided to keep keep him in the garage isolated from our other cats, but he was not agressive. My parents raised Siamese, and the satiny markings looked distinct and prominant and thought it was a good looking homeless cat. Knowing he was a male, I was concerned about his roaming. He would get loose and we wouldn't see him for a time. But he'd manage to show up all frayed, ruffled, and tired, and sleep it off. Another escursion brought him home limping, wounded, and bleeding on his right forearm, got into a scap with another Tom was my guess. He's so passive towards our cats and I thought he was just retarded. A pricey Vet visit later, it was time to commit, and decided to have him nuetered because he was knocked out to tend his three wounds. He survived. Weeks later my son and I were looking for the lazer pointer to play with Smoki. Found the pointer but no batterys and in the same droor a deck of cat cards in the plastic container that the wife bought for Chistmas as stocking stuffers for the kids. Just like the ones descibed by Nerissa. Being curious we looked through them all. WOW!! There was Smoky! But I still didn't believe it until we researced the Nebelung and the desription was a match to Smoki! Now he's fat and happy with family that loves him, the humans anyway. Smoki and the Bandit
